How to play WallCraft
Learn it in two minutes. Master it over many games.
1. The goal
Be the first to move your pawn to any square on the opposite edge of the 9×9 board. Your goal edge glows softly in your colour.
2. On your turn, do one thing
- Move your pawn one step, or
- Place a wall to slow an opponent down.
Never both — and you can’t skip a turn.
3. Moving
- Move one square up, down, left or right.
- No diagonal steps.
- You can’t move through a wall.
4. Jumping
When another pawn stands right next to you, you may jump straight over it. If a wall or another pawn is behind it, you may instead jump diagonally to its left or right.
5. Walls
- Each wall is exactly two squares long and sits in the gaps between squares.
- Walls can’t overlap or cross another wall.
- You can never block anyone completely: every pawn must always have at least one path to its goal. The game checks this for you and shows illegal walls in red.
- You get 10 walls in 1 vs 1 and 5 walls each in 4-player games. When they’re gone, you can only move.
6. Game modes
1 vs 1
The classic duel. Start in the middle of your edge and race to the other side.
2 vs 2
Four pawns, one per side. Partners sit opposite each other, and the first team to get either pawn home wins.
4 players
Everyone for themselves. Four pawns race from four sides — expect a crowded middle.
7. Play online with friends
- Enter your name and pick a mode.
- Press Create online lobby. You become the host and get a 4-letter code.
- Send friends the invite link, or tell them the code.
- Friends open the link, or type the code under Join a friend’s lobby.
- Everyone clicks Sit here on an open seat. Anyone without a seat watches as an observer.
- When every seat is filled, the host presses Start game.
The match runs in the host’s browser, so the host should keep that tab open until the game ends. Refreshing the page is fine — everyone reconnects automatically.
8. Tips
- Walls are most powerful when they force a long detour, not just a one-square sidestep.
- Save a few walls for the endgame, when a single wall can decide the race.
- Watch the “to goal” counter next to each player — it shows their shortest path right now.
